New Year’s Eve LIVE: Police line streets of Berlin, fireworks blasted and Brits gather | World | News

Dozens of countries have now finished celebrating New Year’s Eve, with Australia, New Zealand, and many Asian nations having already crossed into 2024.

Many of those countries have set off fireworks, as is tradition, with skies above capital cities dazzling throngs of crowds gathered to count down the last few seconds of 2023.

Some authorities are expecting people to cause trouble into the night, with police in Germany having declared a state of emergency ahead of potentially chaotic celebrations.

Berlin’s police service issued the declaration and warned people they would be “committing a crime” if they clashed with officers.

In a video on December 28, police and fire brigade workers said: “Do not shoot us with firecrackers, rockets or blank guns. You are committing a criminal offence and face several years in prison.”
